Det tysk-engelska konstnärskollektivet Gob Squad återvänder till festivalen 2012. I deras föreställning Before Your Very Eyes ser vi en grupp 8-14-åringar i ett specialbyggt rum på scenen. Barnen kikar in i framtiden på sig själva som vuxna, och i nostalgiska tillbakablickar ser de sitt nyss förflutna. Gob Squad utlovar “en show med äkta barn!” och en unik möjlighet att se sju liv levda i “fast forward … Before Your Very Eyes!”. En föreställning för vuxna.
För första gången i Gob Squads 17-åriga historia ser vi dem inte själva på scen, istället regisserar de en grupp barn mellan 8-14 år. Barnen befinner sig i ett specialbyggt rum av speglar på scenen, som insekter i en syltburk, vi i publiken kan se dem men de kan inte se oss. En berättarröst leder oss och barnen genom föreställningen och ger barnen instruktioner om vad de ska göra: “We want to see you all carefree”, och vi får en blick in i det bekymmerslösa, prepubertala barnrummet. Men vad som börjar som en skildring av en sorglös barndom utvecklas i takt med att barnen växer till en berättelse om livet självt och dess stora frågor.
På två stora videoskärmar på varje sida om spegelrummet visas dokumentation från början av repetitionerna 2009, och barnen interagerar med dessa tidigare versioner av sig själva. “Har du kommit in i puberteten än?” frågar lille Robbe i videon, och den fortfarande rätt så unge men betydligt mer självsäkre Robbe svarar live: “Dum fråga. Jag ÄR puberteten, jag uppfann puberteten.” Vi får se barnen gå igenom olika skeden i livet samtidigt som de hela tiden konfronteras med frågorna från sina yngre jag.
Föreställningen är den tredje delen i det belgiska produktionshuset Campos trilogi av föreställningar med barn som spelas för en vuxen publik. De två första delarna, Josse De Pauws üBUNG och Tim Etchells That Night Follows Day, gästade festivalen 2002 respektive 2008.

Gob Squad – Before Your Very Eyes

The German-English performance group Gob Squad returns to the festival 2012. In their performance Before Your Very Eyes we see a group of 8-14 year olds in a specially built room on stage. The children onstage peer into the future at themselves as adults, and nostalgically back at their recent past. A live show with real children! And a rare and magnificent opportunity to witness seven lives lived in fast forward … Before Your Very Eyes!
For the first time in their 17 year history, Gob Squad do not appear onstage themselves, instead directing a group of 8-14 year olds. As the audience observe them in a “safe-room” made of one-way mirrors like insects in a jam jar, the children onstage peer into the future at themselves as adults, and nostalgically back at their recent past. A voice over gives the children instructions on what to do: “We want to see you all carefree”, and we get of a tour into the happy, prepubescent playroom. But what start out as a portrayal of a carefree childhood develops as the children grow up to a story about the bigger picture, about the experience of time and impermanence, about life itself.
On two enormous video screens on both sides of the mirrored glass container we see excerpts from the start of rehearsal in 2009. The kids encounter their preserved selves live: “Have you hit puberty yet?” the childish Robbe asks in the video. And the still small but noticeably more self-confident Robbe counters live: “Dumb question. I AM puberty. I invented puberty.” Through different stages of life the children are continuously confronted by the questions by their younger selves.
Gob Squad’s Before Your Very Eyes is the last part of the CAMPO trilogy of theatre works with children, made for an adult audience. The first parts, Josse De Pauw’s üBUNG and Tim Etchells‘ That Night Follows Day, visited the festival in 2002 and in 2008.
